Scientific evidence on progression of renal disease has brought out importance of nutrition in renal disease. Malnutrition, that plagues a renal patient, is a major concern amongst nephrologists. For prevention of malnutrition, disseminating practice of renal nutrition, the way nutritional factors affect progression of renal failure, update on clinical trials on dietary intervention amongst physicians, nephrologists and dietician is the need of the hour. A lot has been published on the nutritional management of patients with renal disease which has dramatically improved survival and quality of life of patients suffering from renal disease.

The aims Indian scientific group which has initiated this move through Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (SRNM) are to promote knowledge, study and practice of the speciality of Renal Nutrition and Nephrology, to promote research, both clinical and experimental in the field of renal nutrition and nephrology.

And to hold meetings, conferences, and exhibitions for promoting study and research in the areas relating to Renal Nutrition and Nephrology [Figure 1].

JRNM ensures access to scientific information renal nutrition from key leaders in the field. This special issue of Journal of Renal Nutrition And Metabolism brings to its readers the proceedings of Society of Renal Nutrition And Metabolism Conference 2018 which was held in Mumbai. The articles are on importance of nutrition in prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD), metabolic impact of comorbidities on kidneys and nutritional status and their nutritional management. The article which requires special mention is “salt a slow poison” which is an educational lecture emphasizing the importance of salt in our lives and the way it influences our physiology (blood pressure), an important cause of renal disease, the number of strokes per year and cancer stomach. It emphasizes on the fact that the government should come up with policies and projects which will help educate people on harmful effects of salt on health and ways out to substitute salt with other options.
