Dear Colleagues,

It is indeed a great pleasure to welcome you all for the 3rd Annual National Conference of the Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (SRNMCON 2018) to be held at Hotel Sea Princess on September 1 and 2, 2018.

We all know that nutrition plays a very important role in the prevention and treatment of kidney diseases. Almost 60% of chronic kidney disease (CKD) results from diabetes and hypertension. A good nutritional management of these two conditions can prevent not only kidney disease but also other complications such as cardiovascular disease. Further, by good nutritional management, many patients with early-stage CKD can be stabilized and in others, the rate of progression of CKD can be significantly retarded. Despite all these benefits, there is very little effort on nutritional management. In fact, efforts have been made toward providing treatment for advanced kidney disease. We all understand that prevention is better than cure.

A unique feature of this conference is that each topic will have a presentation by nephrologists and dieticians. This will provide all delegates an idea about the principles of nutritional management and its actual implementation in clinical practice.

The conference begins on September 1 with nutritional management of children with kidney disease and kidney failure. Then, there will be a presentation on nutritional management of hypertension and diabetes which are the two leading causes of CKD. This is followed by nutritional management to retard the progression of CKD. The next day, there is presentation on nutritional management of patients on renal replacement therapy and an interesting debate on neutraceuticals in CKD. The program ends with presentation on “Holistic approach to health.”

There is an oration on “Ketoanalogues-supplemented very low protein diet in CKD.”

Most importantly, sufficient time is devoted to interesting case presentations and free paper presentation for dieticians and nephrologists. Dr. V. N. Acharya, fondly called the mother of nephrology, who contributed so much to the growth of nephrology in the country, is always stressed on the importance of free paper session.

Finally, for those coming from outside, this conference will provide an opportunity to enjoy many other things in and around Mumbai, the financial, commercial, and entertainment capital of India. In fact, the venue of the conference (Hotel Sea Princess) is on Juhu Beach located on the shores of the Arabian Sea. Juhu beach is a popular tourist attraction throughout the year. The food court at its main entrance is famous for its “Mumbai-style” street food, notably bhelpuri, panipuri, and sevpuri. Acrobats, dancing monkeys, cricket matches, and toy sellers vie for tourist's attention.

On behalf of SRNMCON 2018's organizing committee, I wish all delegates a very good time in Mumbai and assure you that you will go home with a wealth of information and pleasant memories of Mumbai.
